Council Praises York Students for Hard Work on Results Day

City of York Council education leaders have congratulated students across the city as they receive their GCSE and Key Stage 4 results today (Thursday 20 August).

Cllr Bob Webb, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said:

Congratulations to all the young people receiving their GCSE and Key Stage 4 results today. Reaching this point reflects years of hard work, commitment and determination, and I would also like to thank the teachers, school staff, parents, carers and families who have supported students throughout their journey.

"Today is a significant milestone and a moment to celebrate each young person's achievements. Whether you are moving on to sixth form, college, an apprenticeship, training or employment, these results mark the beginning of your next chapter.

"For anyone who may feel disappointed by their results, it is important to remember that exams only measure a very small part of you and your skills, talents and potential remain incredibly important. I would encourage all young people to speak to their school or college if they have questions about their next steps. There is a wide range of advice and guidance available across York to help every student find the route that is right for them.

Support is available across the city, starting with schools and colleges, and information on alternative options and plans can be found on the council's School Leavers webpages.

Young people who are concerned that personal circumstances may affect their access to education, employment or training can also access specialist advice and support.

Support is available from:

  • Your school or college, where staff can provide guidance on next steps

  • Careers advisers working in schools and colleges

  • Admissions teams at York College and Askham Bryan College

  • The National Careers Service, offering information on local employment and training opportunities, or via the national helpline on 0800 100 900

  • The council's York Apprenticeship Hub, with information about local apprenticeship opportunities

  • Specialist Learning and Employment Advisers, who support young people with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and young people in care

Further information and advice for school and college leavers is available at www.york.gov.uk/SchoolLeavers

Anyone feeling anxious or worried about their results or future plans can also access wellbeing support. York Mind provides services for young people through www.yorkmind.org.uk by email at office@yorkmind.org.uk or by calling 01904 643364.
