Jamie Set for Special Starbeck Homecoming After Inspirational 500-Mile Challenge for St John Ambulance

A determined young man from Starbeck is set to receive a very special welcome home as he completes an inspirational 500-mile fundraising challenge for St John Ambulance and raising over ยฃ2500

Jamie, 23, is due to complete his challenge at 6.50pm on Wednesday 7 October 2026, arriving at St Andrewโ€™s Church Hall car park in Starbeck, just one day before celebrating his 24th birthday.

Waiting to welcome Jamie home will be members of the Starbeck St John Ambulance Youth and Fellowship, who will line the outside of the church with flags and bunting to celebrate his achievement.

St John Ambulance Area and County team members have also been invited, together with supporters who have followed and encouraged Jamie through the Jamieโ€™s Challenge Facebook page.

Adding to the celebrations, the Knaresborough Town Crier will be joining the welcome and giving Jamie and his dad, Dale, a suitably big shout as they reach the end of their remarkable journey.

Following Jamieโ€™s arrival, there will be a short presentation inside the church hall, with refreshments and a special cake to mark Jamieโ€™s birthday.

Jamie began his challenge on St Johnโ€™s Day, Wednesday 24 June 2026, aiming to complete the equivalent of the journey from Starbeck to St Johnโ€™s Gate in Clerkenwell, London, and back again.

The challenge was carefully designed around Jamieโ€™s abilities, with the 500 miles completed in manageable stages. Alongside riding a tandem bicycle with his dad, Dale, Jamie has also been swimming and using a rowing machine at the gym to build up the mileage.

Jamie lives with Koolen-de Vries syndrome, learning difficulties, epilepsy and kyphoscoliosis. Following a bleed on the brain, he also experiences variable muscle tone, making coordination and spatial awareness particularly challenging.

Despite the additional concentration and energy physical activities require, Jamie has approached his challenge with enthusiasm and determination.

Although Jamie has limited speech, he communicates confidently using gestures and his adaptive iPad, allowing his personality and determination to shine through.

Jamieโ€™s relationship with St John Ambulance stretches back many years. He first joined Starbeck Badgers, later progressed through the Cadets and is now a member of the St John Fellowship, which he attends with the support of his carer.

Throughout his time with St John, Jamie and his family have experienced the organisationโ€™s welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment, and the 500-mile challenge has been their way of giving something back.

Jamieโ€™s family said:

St John Ambulance has been a huge part of Jamieโ€™s life. The support, encouragement and inclusion he has received over the years have meant so much to him and our family.

This challenge is our way of saying thank you while raising vital funds to help St John Ambulance continue supporting others.

Every mile of Jamieโ€™s extraordinary challenge represents not just a fundraising achievement, but his resilience, determination and appreciation for an organisation that has played such an important part in his life.

Now, after months of effort, the final few metres will be particularly special as Jamie arrives home to flags, bunting, friends and supporters ready to celebrate what he has achieved.

Welcome Home Jamie
