Harrogate-based actor and television personality Billy Bowness is continuing to make his mark on stage and screen, with an award-winning career that has taken him from British television and West End theatre to the Great Yorkshire Show.
For Billy Bowness, Yorkshire has always been an important part of his story. Based in Harrogate and with connections across York, Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Ripon and Manchester, the award-winning performer is building an increasingly varied career while continuing to champion the region he calls home.
Billy has already received the Broadway World Off West End Award for Best Actor, as well as an award for Best Performance in a Short Film for Fervent in 2025. From Biochemistry to the Stage
Billyโs route into entertainment has been anything but conventional.
Before becoming a full-time performer, he worked as both a lawyer and a biochemist, having studied Psychology as well as Theatre & Acting. He eventually made the decision to leave his well-paid biochemistry career and return to acting full time.
His early entertainment career also included regular supporting roles on two of Britainโs best-known soaps, Coronation Street and Emmerdale, giving him valuable experience on major television productions before moving further into acting, presenting and comedy.
A Performer With a Bigger Story to Tell
Away from acting, Billy is passionate about using his public profile to support causes that matter to him.
He is a proud LGBTQ+ supporter and works with Out Together, a charity in Leeds, while also supporting MIND and Dementia Forward. Mental health awareness is particularly important to Billy, who has spoken openly about his own experiences and the importance of encouraging conversations around mental wellbeing.
Billy has also campaigned for water safety awareness following the tragic loss of his son Alex in 2008, using his own experience to encourage people to take greater care around water, particularly during hot weather.
